Editorial response: Predicting protection against encapsulated pathogens.

چکیده
Patients with selective immune defects have provided vivid evidence of the specific host factors that mediate defense against the pneumococcus. Rates of invasive pneumococcal infections may be increased among patients with deficiencies of complement components (involving either the classical or alternative pathway) [1–3], decreased phagocyte number and function (including neutropenia, asplenia, and perhaps specific Fcg receptor IIa allotypes) [3–7], impaired antibody production (e.g., hypogammaglobulinemia, IgG2 subclass deficiency, and selective unresponsiveness to polysaccharides) [8–10], or combined defects (e.g., sickle cell disease, asplenia, and HIV-1 infection) [11–13]. Of these factors, only levels of capsulespecific antibody are currently amenable to modulation by medical intervention.

Transcript analysis of some defense genes of tomato in response to host and non-host bacterial pathogens
The transcript levels of six defense genes including pathogenesis-related gene 1 (PR-1), pathogenesis-related gene 2 (PR-2), pathogenesis-related gene 5 (PR-5), lipoxygenase (LOX), phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and catalase (CAT) were investigated in tomato plants inoculated with Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli as a non-host pathogen and X. euvesicatoria as a host pathogen. Activation o...
متن کاملLeishmania major: immune response in BALB/c mice immunized with stress-inducible protein 1 encapsulated in liposomes.
Protection against leishmaniasis is depending upon generation of a Th1 type of immune response. Field trials of first generation Leishmania vaccine showed a limited efficacy even with multiple doses mainly due to lack of an appropriate adjuvant. In this study, susceptible BALB/c mice were immunized with rLmSTI1 encapsulated in liposomes to explore the extent of protection induced by Leishmania ...
متن کاملTLR Agonist Augments Prophylactic Potential of Acid Inducible Antigen Rv3203 against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv in Experimental Animals
In general, the members of Lip gene family of Mycobacterium tuberculosis evoke strong immune response in the host. Keeping this fact into consideration, we investigated role of Rv3203, a cell wall associated protein with lipolytic activity, in imparting protection against experimental murine tuberculosis. The data of the present study suggested that archaeosome encapsulated Rv3203 induce strong...
متن کاملProtection against Streptococcus suis Serotype 2 Infection Using a Capsular Polysaccharide Glycoconjugate Vaccine.
Streptococcus suis serotype 2 is an encapsulated bacterium and one of the most important bacterial pathogens in the porcine industry. Despite decades of research for an efficient vaccine, none is currently available. Based on the success achieved with other encapsulated pathogens, a glycoconjugate vaccine strategy was selected to elicit opsonizing anti-capsular polysaccharide (anti-CPS) IgG ant...
متن کاملDendritic Cells and Their Role in Cancer Immunotherapy
Dendritic cells (DCs) are antigen presenting cells with unique capability to take up and process antigens in the peripheral blood and tissues. They subsequently migrate to draining lymph nodes where they present these antigens and stimulate naive T lympho-cytes. During their life cycle, DCs go through two maturation stages and are referred to as immature and mature cells, respectively. While im...
